Violence must be tackled at school level: Jansen
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Education expert, Jonathan Jansen says the high levels of violence in the country need to be addressed at a school level.
Jansen delivered the keynote address at teachers' union, NAPTOSA's annual KZN conference in Durban yesterday.
He spoke about the challenges facing South African schools and how to fix them. Jansen referenced the violence in Gauteng this week in which four people were killed.
"I worry about the fact that as we speak, our people are running riot over foreign nationals in Soweto and Daveyton. How did we become so incredibly violent in our culture?" he said.

He says we're not doing a good enough job of raising children in school.
"All of this, believe it or not, has its roots in the Afrikaans word 'opvoeder' and we haven't really done a good job of 'opvoeder' in the context of our schools and that's how things unravel," he said.
