LISTEN: Higher Education to publish gender-based violence policy

The Department of Higher Education and Training says it will release a policy on gender-based violence within the next month.

The Department says the policy will help address the issues around abuse and improve safety within the country's tertiary institutions.

Minister Naledi Pandor says they have opted to introduce the framework during Women’s Month to help bring justice to abused women.

Pandor believes the death of Mangosuthu University of Technology student, Zolile Khumalo should serve as a painful reminder to students that they should be careful of who they trust.

Khumalo was shot dead, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend at an off-campus residence in the Durban CBD in May.

Pandor says officials are also engaging with student leaders to develop a variety of safety programmes for campuses and student residences across the country.


A fountain in memory of Khumalo was unveiled at the varsity this weekend.

MUT also opened a new residence building at the Umlazi campus and marked the inauguration of Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Enoch Duma Malaza.
