eThekwini Metro Police say locals were complaining about a water outage.

They set debris alight and strewn them across both sides of the road.

"Currently we've got about 300 residents that's blocked off the main road, they've got the main road completely obstructed, the residents of that area haven’t been getting water for the past 10 days, but now one of the councillors have arrived, the community is gathering towards him,” said Gareth Naidoo from KZN VIP, who has been monitoring the demonstration.

One resident from Verulam said he struggled to get to work.

"I see the roads are blocked; people are striking for water. So, I went the other way. I tried to use the alternative route, and the same thing occurred as well; then I decided I had had enough of this, and I wanted to park my vehicle.

"Approximately an hour I spent just waiting for a trip that normally takes me 5 minutes to get to my destination."

He says though he empathises with the protesters:

"The tankers distributing water to residence come on a ad hoc basis but it’s not regular. So, you might get them one day and the next day you won’t get water so it’s really difficult."
