Verulam pupils destroy school property

KwaZulu-Natal Education officials say they will not tolerate the disruptive behaviour of pupils at Glenhaven Secondary School in Verulam, north of Durban.

They are said to be against a fence being erected at the school, arguing they do not want to be restricted to the school premises.

Reaction Unit South Africa says its officers and police officers were pelted with stones when they tried to intervene.Provincial Education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi says they are disappointed by what has happened.
"If we put up a fence, it is part of the school's programme. Learners, just because they cannot dodge classes easily then they make it an issue," said Mahlambi.

He says the department is monitoring the situation carefully."We have intervened and believe that by tomorrow, we should have normalised the situation."
Today's protest follows the recent disruptions at a south coast school.
Officials had to intervene at the Roseville Secondary School in Umzinto after chaos erupted when learners demanded longer breaks so that they could smoke.
