Mshengu was speaking at Menzi High School in Umlazi, south of Durban to mark 50 days to start of the Class of 2019's final exams.

He says the department is confident the province will improve on last year's 76.2 percent pass rate.

"There are 50 days left in which the matrics must make choises about their futures," said Mshengu.

"If they are indeed aspiring to be better people in the future, they must make sure they work hard within the remaining 50 days. Whatever they do in these final days will have a direct impact on whether they have a bright future or they will struggle, which is something they should want to avoid."

The first big exams kick-off on the 23rd of October, 2019 at 9am, when pupils sit for their English papers.
