Roshan Lil-Ruthan is a member of the area's water crisis committee.

He says they've tried reaching out to the mayor and other government heads to help.

"There has been no response, even from the MEC in KZN for Cogta. We then escalated this matter to the office of the premier and particularly to the premier herself and then to the Minister of Water and Sanitation Senzo Mchunu hoping that we would get some intervention."

"However, as a community, we are shocked that the minister decided to attend a water quality conference last week instead of paying heed to a crisis that currently plaguing 150 000 citizens."

On Monday morning, frustrated residents blockaded the busy R102 between Phoenix and Verulam rendering it a no-go zone.

It's claimed some areas have had no running water for around three months.

Resident Colin John says they are fed up.

"Water does not even come for an hour, so that we can collect water for the day or the evening."

"So, life has become very difficult without that precious commodity, and we are not trying to be violent people. As a community we are merely standing up together to say, ‘come on board’."
