Vehicle set alight, UKZN suspends lectures

The University of KwaZulu-Natal has suspended classes at all campuses after violent protest action this morning.
The university's management has released a statement to the media saying that classes have been put on hold until further notice.
Students have been demonstrating at the Edgewood and Westville institutions, after the SRC's call this weekend for a shutdown.
Police say students set tyres alight, smashed glass doors and overturned a car before torching the vehicle at the Westville campus.

SRC President, Sanele Hlongwa says students are living in poor accommodation. They don't want students with outstanding debt to be barred from registering.
He says the protests will continue until their demands are met.

"It's supposed to be the whole day unless the university decides to cancel all academic programmes. The protest will continue until tomorrow," Hlongwa said.
