Uvongo Beach remains closed following sewage spill

Uvongo Beach on the south coast will remain closed for now. Environmental Affairs officials in KZN say more water quality tests are being carried out.

 Environmental Affairs officials in KZN say more water quality tests are being carried out.


The beach had to be closed last week after a sewage spill contaminated the seawater. 



The department says water samples that were tested on Wednesday showed that E. coli toxicity levels remain high and aren't within acceptable levels.

Officials say pollution has decreased in waters at the Uvongo Lagoon and sea. 


Yesterday, The eThekwini Municipality reopened Durban's northern beaches after water quality tests were conducted.  


They were temporarily closed - after concerns were raised about a discharge of very abnormal, murky water from the uMngeni River.
