Uvongo Beach remains close due to sewage spill

The Uvongo Beach in the KZN South Coast has been closed following water contamination due to sewage spillage.

The KZN Department of Environmental Affairs visited the affected spill site yesterday. 


MEC Ravi Pillay says both the Ray Nkonyeni Local and Ugu District municipalities have agreed on a plan of action to mitigate and ultimately resolve the issue. 


He says he is concerned about the apparent lack of proper management of the relevant pump stations.

"To this end, we have tankers already on site and have started to pump and remove accumulating sewage, secondly there will be technical chains that will continuously work on repairs to the pump stations that have been damaged and repair a break in the key pipe in the system." 


"Water quality testing will continue until reading reflects satisfactory water quality to allow the reopening of the Uvongo Beach and the situation will be reviewed this coming Monday.
