UPDATE: Operation to remove baby whale from Durban beach underway

An operation to recover the carcass of a beached whale from the water off Pipeline beach in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban is still under way.
Officials from eThekwini Municipality, the police's Search and Rescue Unit and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife are at the beach.

Activity on the beach attracted a large crowd of people to the area.Authorities cleared the beach directly behind where the animal's body was lying in the shore break.

Earlier, two bakkies were used to try and move the whale but they were unable to and have since moved off.
The whale had already died by the time authorities reached the beach.
It is understood the juvenile humpback whale was between one and two years old.
