UPDATE: Manhunt launched for prison escapees, 11 re-arrested

Police have re-arrested 11 suspects who escaped after a police truck was ambushed in Pietermaritzburg.

It had been travelling from the New Prison to the Magistrate's Court.
Police spokesperson, Jay Naicker says five armed suspects stopped and blocked the vehicle at a bridge on Devonshire Road
"The men pointed their firearms to the police officers and they then opened the rear of the vehicle. 31 of the 45 awaiting trial prisoners escaped in the process. A manhunt is underway for the escapees."

Naicker says the hunt is on for 23 suspects in the area.
