UPDATE: Congestion on Van Reenen's Pass begins to clear

The congestion at Van Reenen's Pass - after an almost 24-hour shutdown, has now started to ease.

According to the N3 Toll Concession, the Johannesburg-bound route is now open but clean-up operations are still underway on the Durban-bound side, so motorists can't access that road just yet.

Disgruntled truckers parked dozens of their vehicles on the national roadway - in an illegal protest - over pay.

They also demonstrated against the employment of foreign drivers - causing massive traffic backlogs on the route.

The concession says law enforcement authorities moved in early this morning and managed to disperse the truckers, who yesterday demanded a meeting with the Ministers of Transport and Labour.

KZN Transport's Mluleki Mntungwa says they're surprised about the protest as they are still in talks with trucking companies.
