Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi has revealed an unspent combined total of R1.17 billion is sitting with KZN municipalities.
The money is in the form of Municipal Infrastructure Grants given to municipalities for service delivery purposes.
Sithole-Moloi met with officials from various municipalities on Tuesday, telling them residents are not benefitting from the full-service delivery potential.

The department's Siboniso Mngadi says some of the feedback they've received seems to point to poor or inaccurate planning by municipalities.
"What the department has decided to start to do is we will deploy some if our MIG [Municipal Infrastructure Grant] officials to all the municipalities to assist them in terms of planning the timelines during this time.
'Our main aim is to make sure that all the municipalities would have spent all their MIG grants come next year June."
