Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Special Investigating
Unit has been given the green light to probe allegations of corruption and
maladministration at Umgeni Water Board.

Investigators will also look at how to recover funds which were lost through corruption and negligence.
The SIU says its teams will focus on two specific contracts, including one for security and guarding services.
Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says the other is a five-year contract on social facilitation and community engagement for the board's infrastructure projects.

He says the SIU believes activities linked to allegations of unlawful and improper conduct took place between March 2018 and June this year.
"The SIU investigation will investigate unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure by the Umgeni Water Board in relation to the mentioned contracts.
"Furthermore the investigation will delve into any improper or unlawful conduct by officials or the employees of the Umgeni Water Board or the state, the service provider or any other person or entity in relation to the allegations."
