KZN improved its matric pass rate by 6% and exceeded its target, achieving 83% from the 77% it received last year.

A total of 198 866 KZN pupils wrote matric finals last year.

Sadtu's Mugwena Maluleke says the improved KZN results are linked to the good performances in Isizulu.

"Satu has indicated that the mother tongue teaching is critical and fundamental in any education system for you to access anything.

"For example, science is made available mother tongue, secondly is that Sadtu has a very strong principle forum that plans to improve the schools. So to us, that has played a critical role."

Naptosa in KZN also applauded the teachers who adapted to Covid-19 teaching and went out of their way to help pupils.

Spokesperson Thirona Moodley says the teachers went all out to prepare online lessons.

"Even talk through WhatsApp and send work packages home. Just that so no teaching and learning time is lost in grades 10 and 11 for that group of learners. The teachers were innovative and adjusted to Covid teaching and ensure that no part of the curriculum was left out due to the loss of teaching time."

Natu president Doctor Ngema says the overall national pass rate could have been better if it weren't for the challenges faced by the cohort of pupils.

"We have noted that this class has shown even despite the challenges of no electricity in schools due to loadshedding. We also noted that they perform very well given the challenges pertaining to the shortage of teachers in their school because the department has failed to fill the posts."
