Understaffed KZN school scoops top prize at SA Maths Olympiad

Sibonokuhle High School, in Empangeni, scooped the prize for the best performing Maths, Science and Technology school in Quintile Three in the country at the National Maths Olympiad last weekend.

With less than a month to go before matric final exams, one of the South Africa's top performing high schools in northern KwaZulu-Natal, says it's all systems go for the Class of 2019.

School principal Nkosana Mthembu says they offer the best education they can with the little resources they have.
"It's only this year that we have about two teachers that are offering mathematics. Just imagine, in a learner population of about seven hundred… So, I think the [teacher] who is offering mathematics is going his job very well. He organises classes on Saturdays, sometimes he organises classes after school."
He says Grade 12s will attend a boot camp this weekend ahead of exams.
