uMngeni to introduce new recycling project in bid to ease landfill pressure
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
uMngeni Municipality says it believes a new recycling
project it's planning on introducing soon will drastically reduce the amount of
waste that ends up at its landfill site.
The multimillion-rand plan was inspired by a recent visit to Stellenbosch Municipality in the Western Cape.
A delegation from KZN saw how an effective recycling strategy contributed positively to the economy, environment and the town's waste management plan.

Piet Le Roux, a DA councillor who was part of the delegation, says the sole reliance on landfill sites isn't a sustainable long-term solution.
"Just putting everything on to the landfill sites has the impact of reducing the land site life cycle as well. That is about giving the recycling culture embedded in the community and using clear bags to try and encourage it.
"After that, trying to move it to what we call a material recovery facility, separated into what is sellable and what is not and thereby reduce what we actually put back into the landfill site."
