Umkomaas double murder accused abandons bail

The
family of the elderly Umkomaas couple that was killed in their home, south of
Durban earlier this month says they are relieved the suspect has abandoned
bail.

Shailen Ganas appeared briefly in the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court today. He has been charged with the murders of 78-year-old Sathi Pillay and his 73-year-old wife Chinnama.

The 37-year-old suspect is said to have been a former tenant of the couple.
Jace Govender, the spokesperson for the Pillay family, says they are struggling to cope.
“Basically, everyone in the family does not know how to come to grips with it. People have not gone back to work; some don’t want to eat. It is a very hard time.”
