Umgeni Water says eThekwini's water supply is stable, thanks to rising dam levels in the province.

"The levels of Albert Fall Dam, the largest dam in KZN managed by Umgeni Water, is increasing quite significantly it has now got close to 85%,” says spokesperson Shami Harichunder.

“This is exceptionally good news for the City of Durban. The city gets its water from Hazelmere Dam and other falls as well, together with dams within the Umgeni Water operational area.”

Harichunder says while this is good news, they have been concerned about the water levels at Hazelmere, where construction's been underway to raise the height of the dam wall.

Earlier this month, water was released to ease pressure on the dam.

"The level of the dam water due to good rainfall reached a level of 62% about 10 days ago. We had to reduce that. Finally, we got down to 33%, which is required in terms of being able to maintain safety within the dam itself.

“If the level in the dam continues increasing it could actually affect the wall and push it down.”
