Hazelmere Dam water release poses danger to residents along uMdloti river

Umngeni Water's urging people who live on the banks of the uMdloti River, north of Durban, to be extra cautious.
Spokesperson Shami Harichunder says they're going to be releasing water from Hazelmere Dam today.
He says the heavy rainfall that areas north of Durban experienced over the past two weeks have brought the Dam to its peak water level of 62%.
Harichunder says construction is underway at Hazelmere to raise the height of its wall.
In the past two weeks, there has been very good rainfall in the North of Durban.
This has resulted in a situation in which the Hazelmere Dam reached a level of 62%.

There is construction at this dam to raise the height of its wall, if we keep the dam at the level of 62 percent there could be a risk to the wall that is under construction so therefore we need to reduce the level of the dam by 9 percent.
We will start with immediate effect to begin releasing water from Hazelmere dam which will be done over a period of a few days.
We are cautioning the people living on the banks of the uMdloti River to please be aware, we are going to be releasing water from the dam which will make its way into the making its way into the river.
