Umgeni Water gets auditing experts involved in corruption probe

Umgeni Water says it will appoint an independent auditing firm to conduct an investigation into claims of corruption at the utility.
A whistle-blower circulated emails claiming the company awards tenders in exchange for money.
The anonymous employee sent the emails to several people - including the Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane, NPA boss; Shaun Abrahams and KwaZulu-Natal, Premier Willies Mchunu.

The water utility's spokesperson Shami Harichunder says chief executive, Cyril Gamede has been issued a precautionary suspension notice.
"This week, the chief executive of Umgeni Water Cyril Gamede has been placed on suspension in order for the investigation to be conducted without hindrance of any sorts. The investigation itself will inform the board as to whether the investigation needs to be expended or not," he said.
