The plea comes after the infrastructure damage caused by the recent floods.

Umgeni Steam Railway works to preserve the heritage of railways.

The non-profit organisation is also behind the popular once-a-month family trips between Kloof and Inchanga in vintage locomotives, some from the 1920s and 30s.

USR's Marc Bouchier says the floods have damaged parts of the track on Old Main Line between Kloof and Inchanga.

"The first of the floods we had multiple washaways on our line outside Inchanga all the way up to Botha's Hill - which was particularly bad where we had some major washaways. We had some washaways between Inchanga and Cato Ridge as well, the whole railway line is now in the air.

“Transnet has to come to the party as far as helping with repairs, but they have other issues on their plate.

Anyone who'd like to help by making a donation towards repairs can visit the website.

"You can go to our website www.umgenisteamrailway.com. All the details are there on how people can assist and number to get a hold of everybody,” says Bouchier.
