Umgeni quashes allegations of E. coli at Durban Heights Reservoir

Residents in Reservoir Hills, north of Durban, say they've been dealing with water supply issues for a week.

This, after the Durban Heights Reservoir was drained, apparently after higher than normal E. coli levels were detected. 


A resident we spoke to says many community members are now concerned.


"We have been having issues, but now it's because of the issue of the reservoir. This is very serious."

The DA's eThekwini caucus leader, Nicole Graham, who's been assisting the community, says she's escalated the issue to the municipality. 


"There were notices put up saying there would be interruptions to service. But the interruptions to service happened outside of the time which is what I am told by a councillor - who is our councillor who works in the area - and who has been communicating with me.


But Umgeni Water's Shami Harichunder has moved to calm fears, saying there are no traces of the bacteria.

"The water that is treated and supplied from Durban Heights is amongst the safest to drink. It meets all the quality stands for drinking water. People should not have any concern about the quality of water that comes out from Durban Heights."
