UKZN Westville students voice their concerns following protest

As UKZN is expecting the academic programme to resume this morning, protesting students have vowed to continue disrupting classes and lectures at the university's Westville campus until their demands are met.

Yesterday, scores of students protested on the campus over several issues.

The university's management met with student leaders later to discuss a way forward.

Yesterday, some of the students who took part in the protest told Newswatch the issues they've raised are not new and claimed university management had promised to sort them out before.

Students want bus shuttle times to be extended so they can stay longer on campus to study and they say the NSFAS allowance is not enough.

They are also complaining about the strength of the wi-fi signal at off-campus student residences.

Student accommodation is also on their list of grievances. Some of the rooms are said to be uninhabitable while some students who share a single room are also apparently each paying the same amount as a student  occupying a room alone.

Protesting students brought learning to a standstill yesterday - resulting in a lecture being suspended.

Police later fired rubber bullets to try and disperse them after they apparently turned violent.

Seventeen students were arrested for public violence.
