17 students arrested in UKZN Westville unrest

Seventeen UKZN students have been arrested at the Westville campus where there have been protests today.

Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says a large group of students gathered on the campus and disrupted lectures.
It's understood they are complaining about student accommodation. Gwala says some of the protesting students pelted police with stones.
"There are police vehicles that were damaged during the violent protest. A total of seventeen students were arrested for public violence and they will appear in court soon. The police are still busy at the scene - stabilising the situation," Gwala said.

UKZN management says the academic programme at Westville Campus has been suspended for today, including all tests.
Management is expected to meet with student leaders.
