UKZN Westville cancels lectures amid protests
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
Lectures at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus have been suspended today and tomorrow, following violent protests overnight.
Several Police monitor UKZN Westville after protests.
University management says The South African Police Service, Public Order Police as well as the university's Risk Management Services are on campus to keep the situation under control.
The University claims the students' concerns have not yet been brought to its attention. But the ANC Youth League says its over the closing of the Registration Appeals Committee process.
The League's Thanduxolo Sabela says they are calling on the university to reconsider its decision.
"If you have a debt as a student, you'd be able to enter into an agreement with the university for a payment plan. That process has been an ancient one.
"Now, once the university says it closes that - it means the university says the students must have the money upfront, which can sometimes go into many thousands which our students really don't have," hew said.
The League says although it condemns the violence, it fully supports the demands of the students.
UKZN says academic activities at other campuses have not been affected.
