UKZN students call for govt intervention
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The Student Representative Council at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus says it should not be held responsible for any violence during the student stay-away this week.

While condemning violence and the destruction of property, the SRC is calling for the release of five students arrested in connection with recent protest activity at the institution.
The SRC's president and secretary are currently in police custody.
Students staying at the Lonsdale Residence in Durban's Point area and those at Millarosa in Overport are boycotting classes.
The SRC's Nash Khumalo says the government must keep a close eye on learning institutions.
"One of the main the reasons why universities are always striking is the fact that universities operate autonomously but the money they operate with is the money they get from the government. The government must at least intervene. You can't give someone money and then say 'do what you want'. You must come and monitor processes," he said.
Management at the varsity is in negotiations with students.
