UKZN Westville students boycott classes

They include SRC secretary Ngcebo Mazibuko, who was arrested on Monday allegedly for inciting the violence that saw university property torched last month.

Earlier students filled the lobby of the residence while those from the SRC addressed them.

SRC member Nash Khumalo says they also want the student council's president Lukhanyo Mtshingana who was arrested last month to be released.

"We actually don't understand as students why these students are being arrested because the issue is that on campus there is a lot of security guards which we don't even know why they are there. They're assaulting and robbing students on campus.

"So, those are the issues that we're having. We want those security guards to be removed and then we want our comrades back because they did nothing wrong and there's no proof of such," he said.

Police are maintaining a presence outside the campus.

University management also says this morning two students were apprehended by Risk Management Services in the Commerce car park of its Pietermaritzburg campus for being in possession of a bag containing faeces. 

Elsewhere - students at the Dunstaple Heights Residence on Varsity Drive in Durban were locked in the building by protesting students. 

It's alleged that RMS attempted to cut the locks but were pelted with stones and bottles. 

 The police's Jay Naicker says a small group of about 20 students gathered outside the campus, blocking both entry and exit through the main gate.

''The students threatened to stone anyone who does not obey their instructions. Police were called out and when the police arrived on the scene, they dispersed the crowd. 

''No injuries were sustained and police are still monitoring the situation,'' he said.

UKZN management says lectures are continuing and discussions with student leadership remains ongoing.
