UKZN SRC welcomes Zuma's decision on funding

The Student Representative Council at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus has welcomed the establishment of a task team to look into student funding at universities in South Africa.
Yesterday, President Jacob Zuma met with the Vice-Chancellors of the universities in the country to discuss issues affecting them.
Following the discussions, Zuma announced that a task team comprising officials from the Department of Higher Education, the Office of the Presidency, officials from the National Students' Financial Aid Scheme and various student structures.
They will submit a report to him at the end of next month.
Westville SRC member Nash Khumalo believes the issue is not the lack of funding but the continued fee increment at universities.
''If it's going to be particularly looking at how fees are being increased, I think it's the right solution to deal with the issue of funding. When the government gives the universities a stipend but they don't follow up on how the money was used or if's being used accordingly.
''They should focus on monitoring every cent they pump into a university,'' he said.
