Students at the Westville campus embarked on a protest last month that saw buildings and vehicles being torched, costing the institution millions of rands.

Among their concerns were proposed increases to registration fees.

UKZN's Lesiba Seshoka says discussions went very well.

"It's safe to say that all the issues that are in the memorandum have been addressed. It doesn't include the issue of people that were involved in violence - burning buildings and so on.

"We all have reached consensus that it was purely a criminal activity and we can not negotiate criminality," he said.

The five people who were arrested in connection with the strike action appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Two students were denied bail, charges against the other three were dropped.
