During the protests earlier this week, university property was damaged - with a section of the law library at Howard College set alight, while six vehicles were burned at the Westville campus.
Serious allegations of sexual assault by police - sent in to manage the protests - also surfaced.
Speaking during a media briefing at the Westville campus today - university council member Sammy Mashita said these developments have put a spotlight on security at the institution.
The rape allegations by PMB students against police officers also came up.
The university's Lesiba Seshoka has moved to clarify that currently, only one incident of sexual assault has been reported.
"When that issue came up we said to the students we would like to see you because we are still the .... Our teams sat down with them and said look we just need some kind of clarity because we have got a mess here we need to explain what exactly happened and she indicated clearly that this is not the case this did not happen on campus," he said.
In a statement yesterday, the South African Police Service also said no rape by a police officer has been reported in Pietermaritzburg but are investigating one charge of sexual assault.
