UKZN protest 'no longer just about fees'

Police and security personnel are expected to keep a close eye on UKZN's Pietermaritzburg campus again today following recent violent protests.

Instability prevailed at the campus following two alleged sexual assault and rape incidents by police on students on Monday.

Some students claim police then raided their residences and assaulted them.

Students wearing black marched yesterday against what they called critical issues that need attention.

The students handed over a memorandum of demands to police officials - calling for the removal of security forces and the SAPS from the campus.

The university's Lesiba Seshoka yesterday said complaints pertaining to these allegations are yet to be laid.

"Procedurally, if it happened on campus, it is us - we are responsible for campus security. But if anyone moves out of campus or goes to some place and gets harassed there - it's not for the university to be commenting on such things," he said.

Co-ordinator and third year student, Amanda Khumalo says their agenda is no longer just about fees.
