Two suspects killed in Durban shootout

Two suspected hijackers have been killed in a shootout with police on the N2 near the NPC plant in Durban.

Police say members received information regarding a vehicle that was stolen from the King Shaka International Airport travelling on the N2 near Bellair last night
According to KZN police members of Tracker, Durban SAPS and the Metro Police K9 Unit pursued the vehicle and attempted to intercept it before they were met with heavy gunfire.
Officers retaliated and two suspects, believed to be in their 30s were killed.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says an illegal firearm with four rounds of ammunition was found next to one of the suspects.
"The third suspect managed to escape and is still being sought by police. The stolen vehicle was also recovered. Charges of attempted murder, inquest, possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of stolen vehicle were opened at Bellair SAPS."
"KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula expressed his relief that the police officers escaped the shootout unarmed," she said.
Their bodies were recovered from an embankment on the side of the road and handed over to the Bellair SAPS.
