Two suspected rhino poachers nabbed in northern KZN

Two suspected rhino poachers arrested in northern KZN have been remanded in custody.


Rhino Horns

They were stopped in their tracks following a high-speed chase near Vryheid on Thursday.


Police in the town were tipped-off about a vehicle loaded with horns.

They intercepted it on the R34 near Klipfontein Dam on Thursday. 


The police's Nqobile Gwala says its occupants were two men aged 51 and 64.

"Upon searching the vehicle police found a rifle, inside the engine   as well as   two rhino horse wrapped in a black plastic. Both suspects were placed under arrest for unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of rhino horns."


"A caucus of a rhino was found  at a Hluhluwe-Umfolozi park. It was established that the stolen firearms was stolen in Eastern Cape."    


Gwala says further investigations have revealed the 51-year-old suspect had been out on parole for attempted murder and robbery in Camperdown.


The other man was also wanted for other crimes in other provinces. 



The pair appeared in the local court on Friday.
