A community member and a security guard who was on duty nearby were wounded and taken to hospital.

Reports from the scene say the driver produced a gun after stones were thrown at the motorist's vehicle.

Officers say cases of attempted murder will have to be opened by the protestor and guard.

Meanwhile officials say the N2 Northbound, the R102 in the vicinity of Groutville remain a no-go zone this morning.

The R102 protest action has now spilled onto the N2.

"The protest is ongoing. All vehicles coming to and from Durban were at risk of being thrown with stones. We want to warn drivers to use alternative routes. The road has been closed but police have arrived on scene and the situation is stable,"  the police's Thembeka Mbhele.

Nick Cloete - who drove past protesters on the N2 North this morning - says some people who are waiting for lifts have been left stranded.

"As I went through the Stanger Toll, those protesters were coming down from the R102 and onto the N2 and they started to throw things. I could see them in my rearview mirror. There weren't a lot of people - it looked like there was something burning on the R102 just over the hill. There were a lot of people looking for lifts on the opposite side of the highway because they couldn't get transport to where they were going," Cloete said.

UPDATE - The N2 on both carriageways near the Groutville off-ramp has been re-opened. Traffic on all lanes is free-flowing.
