Two people have been arrested in connection with the theft of over R17 million at the Department of Justice's Pietermaritzburg office.

KZN Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says the funds are believed to have been stolen from the Guardian's Fund last April.
The facility holds funds for people who are legally incapable, such as minors, unborn heirs, and others who do not have the capacity to manage their own funds.

"Hawks members have managed to trace and track the suspects. They worked together with the National Prosecuting Authorities Asset Forfeit Unit and financial intelligence centre to recover more than R8 million of stolen funds."
Mhlongo says the duo faces fraud and money laundering charges.
"It is part of our investigation as much as we know it was fraudulently transferred from the department's banking system to various accounts belonging to the arrested suspects. More arrests are expected in this matter. They are the owners of the entities that unduly benefited from the stolen funds."
