Two more suspects arrested for Umbumbulu hostage drama

Police have nabbed two more suspects who were allegedly involved in an armed robbery that led to a hostage situation in Umbumbulu, south of Durban.

The duo is believed to have been part of a group of five robbers who targeted a cellphone shop in Cato Ridge on Tuesday.


Police pursued the gang as they got away, racing towards Umbumbulu.

The driver lost control of their getaway car on a dirt road.


One suspect was arrested, three fled into bushes while a fifth ran into a nearby house and held the occupants, a 50-year-old woman and her grandchildren aged 2 and 5, hostage.


A hostage negotiator was called and the three were rescued and the suspect arrested.


KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker says following a multidisciplinary operation that was conducted overnight, two more suspects were arrested at Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi.

"One of the suspects was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition. This brings the total number of suspects arrested to four. 


"The four men who are aged between 33-50, are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court tomorrow facing charges of armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition as well as kidnapping."
