Police probing more than 200 cases of political killings - Cele

The police ministry says since 2018 the task team assigned to political killings has investigated over 200 cases.
Police Minister Bheki Cele says 289 arrests have been made.
The inter-ministerial committee gave an update in Durban on investigations on Wednesday afternoon.

"Moreover, 22 accused have sentences ranging from 10 to 50 years handed down to them,” said Cele.
“Twelve accused have been convicted for no more than 10 years and the remainder are going through the court processes.
"In addition, 116 case dockets not related to the Task Team’s mandate but somehow linked to politically related cases, either with similar suspects and or ballistic analysis, are being processed by the task team for further investigation."
The briefing comes days after the murders of two KwaZulu-Natal politicians.

Inkatha Freedom Party councillor and Speaker of Amajuba, Reginald Ndima, was gunned down on Saturday outside his Newcastle home.
A week earlier, eThekwini councillor Minenhle Mkhize was also killed outside his home in Cliffdale.
