Two medics in ICU after attempted robbery at KwaMashu base

Two paramedics are in ICU after they were shot during an attempted robbery at an EMS base in KwaMashu, north of Durban.

The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department says a gunman gained access to the community health centre on Wednesday morning by scaling a nearly two-metre fence.
Spokesperson Ntokozo Maphisa says a scuffle ensued when the man tried to rob a paramedic.

Maphisa says the suspect fired a shot, hitting the 55-year-old medic in the abdomen.
He says when his colleagues rushed to help, the assailant opened fire again, shooting another 58-year-old paramedic in the chest.
"While the two paramedics were rushed to a Durban hospital, where they continue to receive medical attention in ICU.
"Reacting to the news, MEC for Health said that she is really and has called for justice to take its course."
KZN police say the attacker jumped the fence and fled when he spotted security guards.

They say he left behind a gun and two cell phones.
KwaMashu police are investigating two attempted murder cases.
