An overseas tourist would be forgiven for thinking there are lions roaming in our backyards.

Sharon Jenkins from Dawncliffe Neighbourhood Watch has told Newswatch of the moment two lion cubs were discovered on a property in Westville on Tuesday.

"A patroller from the Dawncliffe Neighbourhood Watch was alerted to the fact that there was somebody in the yard, and they seemed to have an animal with them. The patroller then went to see if he could assist and, once he got there, realised that the animals that were in the yard were two lion cubs."

She said the police and the SPCA were alerted.

"The residents denied everything. They denied knowing about the lion cubs. When SAPS and SPCA arrived at the home, and the two lion cubs were there. They were very tame, and they were being looked after by some other patrollers. The SPCA then took these two lion cubs with them for safekeeping."

Barbara Patrick, who's with Kloof SPCA, said wildlife experts will be assessing the cubs.

"From my understanding, one is a female, and the other is a male. They have to be seen by wildlife there, but we would then be able to give you further information on their actual condition."

She couldn’t confirm how long they'll be kept at the SPCA.

"It is part of an investigation and police and Ezemvelo are involved, so at this stage it is too early to say what is going to happen to them because none of use know right now."

Newswatch reached out to KZN police amid reports of an arrest.
