Two killed in Empangeni knife attack

Two people have been killed and another seriously wounded after a man went on a stabbing spree in Empangeni on the north coast.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says the assailant's first victim was a 10-year-old girl who had been walking to school with her friends.

"The suspect allegedly stabbed a 10-year-old girl to death. The other learners managed to escape. [The attacker] then stabbed a 59-year-old man who had been in the area."

The second victim also succumbed to his injuries.

A third person, a woman, sustained serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital for further care.

Zwane says the attacker then became a victim of mob justice.

"Community members who saw the incident attacked the suspect."

The man was beaten to death before being set alight.

"He died instantly. Empangeni SAPS have opened, altogether, three counts of murder as well as one of attempted murder."
