Two people have been killed and seven others injured in a double-vehicle crash on the N3 between Hilton and Cedara.
An ambulance transporting patients collided with a truck on the southbound side on Friday morning.
"At the moment, we don't know where they were coming from, but they were coming from an outlying area going for hospital visits or to another facility in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment,” said Mark Winterboer, who's with Midlands EMS.

"The rest of them that have survived will be continued to the facilities. Sadly, the ones that have died will be taken to shortage facilities."
Traffic was severely backed up on the route, which had been reduced to one lane.
Winterboer said the patients suffered various injuries.
