Two children drown in separate incidents

There have been more drowning tragedies in the province.


An eight-year-old child drowned in Pietermaritzburg, while he and his mother were trying to cross a stream near their home.


He was swept downstream into a local river.


On the south coast, a 12-year-old boy also drowned in the Mpenjati River, near Margate.


A Police Search and Rescue team had to walk a kilometre to reach the point where he drowned before starting their dive operation.

They found his body yesterday.


Inquest dockets have been opened into both incidents.


Earlier this week three boys drowned in a river near Pinetown.


One of them had got into difficulty in the Izimbokodo River in Kwandengezi where they had been swimming.


Two other boys tried to help him but also drowned.
