Truck drivers block roads, halt operations at Durban port

Some truck drivers and owners have brought to a standstill the operations at the Port of Durban today.

They're upset over what they claim are regular delays at Pier Two at the Durban Container Terminal. 

A source has told Newswatch that keys were taken away from truckers queuing to enter or exit the terminal last night - in order to block Bayhead and Langerberg roads. 

Traffic on South Coast Road has also been affected.  

Operator, Baya Dookie says their issues have been ongoing for some time.

He says transporters are losing money because of port inefficiencies.

"There are no facilities here. The drivers are sitting in our trucks and are not allowed to jump off the trucks. The staff at Portnet don't work - they will sit for an hour - reading a newspaper. All the owners are fed up now." 

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area as the protest is causing havoc for those trying to reach or leave the Bluff.
