The accident took place shortly after 10am on Sunday, when a tanker caught alight, spreading the blaze to the other vehicles.

Emergency authorities closed the freeway for hours until firefighters contained the raging fire.

"Sadly, it is suspected that there are fatalities as a result of the crash. However, the exact number of fatalities cannot be determined at this stage as the vehicles caught alight after the crash.
