One person died in a fire that destroyed at least 300 informal dwellings in Umgeni Local Municipality, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Sunday.

It's unclear how the blaze at the Mthulweni informal settlement broke out.
In another incident on Saturday evening, 20 houses were burnt to the ground when a veld fire spread out in the Nkandla region.

KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila says disaster management teams have been sent out to the affected communities.
"Disaster management teams responded to the scene. They put out the fire. Hlomuka is leading the response to the affected families.
"Also in the area of Nkandla MEC Hlomuka has dispatched disaster management teams there. In this incident, there was no loss of life.
"MEC Hlomuka has urged residents to continue to be vigilant against the dangers that are opposed by fires especially now that the province is in winter," says Mzila.
