Trio crime stats climb in third quarter

Robbers targeted 77 South African homes between October and December.

Police Minister Bheki Cele released the quarterly crime stats on Friday.
He says there was a rise in the so-called trio crimes over these three months. Aggravated robberies such as carjacking increased by 7%.
But the minister says fewer businesses were robbed during this time.

"Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the country's trucking industry. An increase in the targeting of delivery vans and trucks were reported.
"Majority of the vehicles, including courier vans, were targeted for their cargo which is usually food, appliances and other priced goods."
On cash-in-transit heist, Cele said: "It is clear the SAPS must change its responses to cash-in-transit robberies. The current plan in place now is clearly not working. There were 26 more attacks on cash vans in the third quarter of 2020/2021 financial year."

He says the SAPS must go back to the drawing board in order to fight against cash-in-transit robberies.
