Trending in SA: Viral videos of 2016

Videos are the fastest growing, and most popular choice of entertainment online. And this year has been no different. From videos exposing bullying in KZN schools, to road rage incidents caught on camera - these snippets of multimedia content have captured the attention of thousands of social media users in South Africa in 2016. Taking a walk down memory lane, here are the top trending videos of 2016.

'Racist' rant in Johannesburg

Forming another addition to the growing list of racially offensive incidents this year, estate agent Vicki Momberg was filmed hurling insults at metro police officers in Northriding, Johannesburg after falling victim to a smash-and-grab incident


The video trended on social media with the Human Rights Commission having laid charges against her. 


She is currently facing a charge of crimen injuria.

R102 crash in Empangeni, north of KZN 

Five people lost their lives after a minibus taxi veered out of its lane and ploughed into a bus that was travelling on the oncoming lane on the R102 in Empangeni last month. 


The sixth victim died later in hospital. While speaking to Newswatch, a survivor of the crash recalled searching for his brother soon after the accident occured.

Durban flooding 

Heavy rains descended on Durban - resulting in the flooding of many roads during one of the city's biggest storms this year. 


Emergency teams were deployed across KZN, while major routes were closed due to flooded highways. 


This claimed the lives of two women - one who was swept away in Chatsworth while trying to exit her car, while a Sunningdale resident was reported missing after her car was found abandoned in the Glen Anil area.


Sydenham school bullying incident

A major issue that has come to the forefront - because of the virality of visual content on social media - was videos depicting bullying on school premises, which have now caused parents, school governing bodies and the Department of Basic Education to confront the issue of bullying in schools. 


The parents of a 15-year-old pupil brought charges against five girls - after their daughter was assaulted in a bathroom of Bechet Secondary School. 


The parents successfully obtained a protection order against these learners.


Durban Christian Centre ( Jesus Dome) fire

One of Durban's landmarks was engulfed in flames on a Tuesday evening in June - which saw firefighters work well over two hours to contain the fire


Reported live on scene by ECR Newswatch, Durban residents then shared images and videos of the incident.  It was later confirmed that an electrical fault was the cause of the fire.

Coffin assault

Two men accused of the assault of Victor Mlotshwa by forcing him into a coffin - were denied bail in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court earlier this month. 


The incident caused outrage country-wide - after footage of a frightened Mlotshwa being forced into a coffin was circulated online. 


In the video, Theo Jackson and Willem Oosthuizen are heard threatening Mlotshwa. 


The pair face charges relating to assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and kidnapping.
