Transport dept advocates for harsher penalties after Umlazi fatal crash

The driver of a taxi that knocked over and killed four people, including three children, outside the Reunion train station in Umlazi last week will appear in court again on April 20.

The National Prosecuting Authority says Scelo Mseleku, facing four counts of murder, was released on R2000 bail yesterday.
The Transport Department's Kwanele Ncalane says harsher penalties must be laid by the court.

"R2000 bail is too lenient for a person who was behind the wheel where four people were killed. If the bail is heavy, it serves as an important deterrent," he said.
