Transnet, unions agree on picketing rules amid wage talks

Transnet and labour unions have agreed on picketing rules and designated sites to allow peaceful protests as wage negotiations continue.
It's been two weeks of wage strikes by some disgruntled Transnet workers in Durban and Richards Bay who have blocked various entrances at the state-owned company sites.
The signed agreement between Transnet and the South African Transport and Allied Workers and the United National Transport Union is the result of the first-day conciliation talks under the watch of CCMA yesterday.

The talks on wages have since been in deadlock as the employer's offer of between 3%, 3.5% or 4% depending on job grade was rejected by the workers.
They are demanding 13.5%.
Transnet previously stated that with the current employed 40 000 people - the salary costs make up 66% of total operating costs.

Since last week, protests have flared up and continue while wage negotiations processes will resume on Tuesday.
